Product Photography: Shipping and Packaging Guide

Reading time: 5 minutes

When you commission Product Photography for Catalogues, the quality of the final image depends not only on the lighting and lens but also on the condition of the item upon arrival. A product that arrives scratched, dented, or covered in dust requires extensive cleaning or replacement, which can delay your project timeline. This guide ensures your items reach our Brisbane studio in pristine condition.

Why Packaging Matters for High-End Imagery

In professional studio photography, we work with high-resolution sensors that capture every detail. A microscopic scratch or a smudge of adhesive from poor packaging can become a prominent flaw in a zoomed-in catalogue shot. By following these guidelines, you minimise the need for corrective retouching and ensure that the essence of your product is captured accurately.

Whether you are sending a single luxury item or a batch of ten or more, the principles of stability and surface protection remain the same. Our goal is to move your product from the shipping box to the shooting bay with zero contact between the product surface and any abrasive materials.

Choosing the Right External Packaging

The outer box should be significantly larger than the product itself to allow for a "buffer zone" of cushioning. We recommend double-walled corrugated cardboard boxes for items sent via courier services across Queensland or from interstate. This prevents the box from collapsing if other heavier parcels are stacked on top during transit.

Ensure the box is sealed with heavy-duty packing tape along all seams. For items being delivered locally within the Brisbane City district, ensure the packaging is sturdy enough to withstand the vibrations of a delivery vehicle.

Internal Cushioning and Stability

The most common cause of damage is movement within the box. Your product should be "suspended" in the centre of the packaging. We suggest the following materials based on product type:

  • Bubble Wrap: Ideal for hard surfaces, but ensure the bubble side faces outward to avoid leaving circular patterns on delicate finishes.
  • Acid-Free Tissue Paper: Essential for clothing, jewellery, or polished metals to prevent chemical reactions or scratches.
  • Foam Inserts: The standard for fragile electronics or glassware. Custom-cut foam prevents any shifting.
  • Biodegradable Packing Peanuts: Useful for filling voids, provided the item is already wrapped in a protective layer.

Handling Special Finishes and Materials

Different materials require different care. For highly reflective surfaces (chrome, glass, polished acrylic), we recommend wrapping the item in a soft microfiber cloth before the bubble wrap. This prevents the plastic from "sticking" to the surface or leaving marks.

For textile products, ensure they are folded neatly to avoid permanent creases. If the item is prone to wrinkling, we suggest shipping it in a garment bag within the box. Please note that while we have a private dressing room and makeup station for people, product "grooming" is handled by our Senior Retoucher and Lighting Specialist to ensure technical perfection.

Shipping to our Brisbane Studio

Our studio is located at 142 Eagle Street, Brisbane QLD 4000. When arranging your courier, please specify that the delivery is for Barbevexaxo Pty Ltd. If you are using a local courier service within Brisbane, we recommend requesting a "fragile" handling designation.

Upon arrival, our Studio Manager, Hamish Johnson, inspects all incoming shipments. We will notify you within our standard response time of 24 hours if any item arrives damaged. To avoid delays, please include a detailed packing slip inside the box listing every item sent, including the quantity and any specific handling instructions for that particular piece.

The Unpacking and Preparation Process

Once your items arrive, they enter our preparation phase. We carefully unwrap each piece, removing any dust or fingerprints using professional cleaning agents. This is where the importance of your packaging is realised; if an item arrives clean and scratch-free, we can move straight to the lighting setup.

If you are sending a batch (10+ items), please organise them in the box by category or SKU. This helps our team track the inventory and ensures that no item is missed during the shooting process. This efficiency allows us to maintain our delivery timeline of 10 working days for the final frames.

Final Checklist Before Shipping

  • Surface Check: Is the product clean and free of dust?
  • Wrap: Is the item protected by a non-abrasive first layer?
  • Stability: Does the item move when the box is gently shaken?
  • Documentation: Is there a packing slip with your contact details and a list of items?
  • Labeling: Is the address 142 Eagle Street, Brisbane QLD 4000 clearly visible?

If you have any questions regarding a specific complex item, please reach out to us via our contact page. We are happy to provide bespoke advice to ensure your products are presented accurately.
