Portrait Photography

Capturing the essence of personality through precise lighting, artistic direction, and high-resolution studio mastery in the heart of Brisbane.

A professional portrait session in progress with a model and photographer in a controlled studio environment.

A great portrait is more than just a high-resolution image; it is a visual narrative that communicates confidence, character, and emotion. At Barbevexaxo, we approach portraiture as a collaboration between the photographer and the subject. By combining a controlled studio environment with a relaxed atmosphere, we ensure that every client feels comfortable, allowing their authentic self to emerge before the lens. Whether you require a striking image for your personal brand or a timeless piece of art, our Brisbane studio provides the technical infrastructure to achieve a professional result.

Our approach integrates classical portraiture techniques with modern digital precision. We utilise a 120 m² studio space equipped with professional strobe and continuous LED systems, allowing us to manipulate light and shadow to highlight your features. From the subtle gradients of a corporate headshot to the dramatic contrast of a creative editorial portrait, every detail is meticulously planned. We believe that the quality of a portrait is decided long before the shutter clicks, starting with a thorough understanding of the client's goals and ending with a rigorous retouching process.

The Portrait Session Process

01
Consultation and Concept

We begin with a detailed discussion about the desired mood, purpose, and style of the portraits. This stage involves selecting the background, discussing wardrobe choices, and defining the visual language of the shoot to ensure the final images align with your expectations.

02
Lighting Setup and Posing

Upon arrival at our Brisbane City studio, we implement a lighting scheme tailored to your facial structure and the session's mood. Our lead photographer guides you through a series of poses, adjusting angles and expressions in real-time to capture the most flattering and natural shots.

03
Image Selection

Following the shoot, we provide a curated gallery of unedited proofs. You select the frames that represent the desired outcome. This collaborative selection process ensures that the final retouched images are exactly what you envisioned.

04
Professional Retouching

The selected images undergo a detailed retouching process. Our specialists focus on skin texture, colour correction, and lighting refinements, ensuring a polished, professional look while maintaining the natural integrity of the subject.

Who is this service for?

Portrait photography at Barbevexaxo is designed for individuals who value quality and precision. This includes entrepreneurs and freelancers who need a strong visual identity for their websites and social media. It is also ideal for actors and models looking to update their portfolios with versatile looks that demonstrate their range. Beyond professional needs, we welcome individuals seeking high-quality personal portraits for family archives or artistic expression. If you require an image that conveys authority, warmth, or creativity, our studio is equipped to deliver that specific impression.

Our Technical Approach to Portraits

Working in our Brisbane studio allows us to eliminate the unpredictability of outdoor lighting. We use a combination of softboxes for flattering skin tones and hard lights for architectural facial definition. The 4.5-metre ceiling height enables us to position lights at optimal angles, avoiding the flat look common in smaller studios. Every session is managed by our team, including a lighting specialist who ensures that the highlights and shadows are balanced across every frame. This technical rigour results in images that require less corrective work and possess a natural, high-end luminosity.

Preparing for Your Session

To achieve effective results, preparation is key. We recommend choosing clothing that is timeless and avoids overly busy patterns, which can distract from the face. Solid colours usually work well against our white cyclorama. We provide a private dressing room and a makeup station for your convenience. It is helpful to bring two or three different outfit options to provide variety in the final gallery. For more detailed advice, we invite you to read our comprehensive guide on how to prepare for your portrait session.

What You Will Receive

Upon completion of the project, you receive a digital package designed for both professional use and personal archiving. The deliverables include:

Timelines and Delivery

We value efficiency without compromising quality. The standard delivery time for the initial proofing gallery is 3 to 5 working days after the shoot. Once you have selected your final images for retouching, the finished files are delivered within 10 working days. This timeframe allows our senior retoucher to apply meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every pixel is correct. Please note that raw files are not provided as standard, as they represent an unfinished product; however, arrangements for raw delivery can be discussed separately.

Exclusions and Limitations

To maintain transparency, it is important to note what is not included in the standard portrait package. Hair and makeup artistry are not provided by the studio, although our makeup station is available for your own stylist. Extensive digital manipulation—such as changing backgrounds, altering body shapes, or complex composite work—is considered advanced retouching and is billed as an additional service. Additionally, the cost of physical prints or canvases is not included in the digital session fee.

Pricing Structure and GST

Our pricing is transparent and designed to cover the professional expertise, studio overheads, and equipment maintenance. All prices are quoted in Australian Dollars (AUD). For individual clients, the price includes the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST). For B2B clients, we provide the breakdown of the price excluding GST for accounting purposes. The total cost depends on the package selected (Standard or Premium), which varies based on the duration of the shoot and the number of retouched images included.

Package Price (inc GST) Price (ex GST) Unit
Standard Portrait A$350 A$318.18 per session
Premium Portrait A$550 A$500.00 per session
